Dinner was delicious and the conversation was a lot less uncomfortable than the last time Evan sat at Max’s table with his parents. As they were cleaning up, Selene took Evan aside and gave her a hug.
“You did the best you could in a rough situation, and those girls are wonderful people. Emery and Darra were excellent parents and it shows. I’m glad you finally told Max, and that we can be in their lives. I was hurt, at first, but after talking to Max and the girls, I understand. We all do things when we’re afraid that may not make sense at the time. I know I did. I’m just glad our families are together now,” Selene said.
“Thank you, Mrs. Rivera,” Evan said.
“Call me Selene. We’re family,” Selene said.
“Thank you…Selene. I’m glad you’re so welcoming with the girls. They’ve lost so much – I just want them to have as much family as possible.”
“Well, I’ve got granddaughters now. I couldn’t be happier. We’ll be back up here for their graduation next year, and maybe even for Thanksgiving through Christmas. Max already said we could stay here when we come up.”
“That sounds wonderful. Having you around for the holidays and for their big moments is so important. I’m just sorry you missed so much time with them,” Evan said.
“We didn’t miss all that much. Emery and Darra often had us over to play cards or board games and the girls were always around then. I just didn’t realize they were blood family as well as chosen. The past is the past. Let’s just focus on now, shall we?” Selene said.
Evan gave her another hug. “Sounds like a plan. Safe travels tomorrow.”
