Evan spent the next two days doing her best to finish up a project she’d been working on to surprise the girls and Max. She scanned every photo, note, and letter that she could find to preserve the memories of Darra and Emery in their lives. Love letters between Em and Darra, photos of them with the girls, of Em and Evan together and with their parents and uncle, of Darra with her family – they were all scanned and saved up to a cloud account. It started when she’d found some plastic totes in the back of a closet in the office and realized what they were. So many of the old photos that Evan had seen before and forgotten about, and they brought back some good memories. Those were precious things, as she now understood, and so she used technology to make sure the girls – and herself – would have access to them all. She also wanted Max to be able to see the girls as they grew. There were photos of dance classes and first days at school, lost teeth, and vacations they took to Maine, DC, and Florida.
“What are you doing?” Max asked as he stepped into the office.
“Finishing up a project. Look at this,” Evan said and held out a photo of the twins at about age three. They were both in blue sequins and tutus, and they looked adorable.
“Oh, wow. That’s the girls?” Max asked.
“Yeah. I found some tote bins full of letters and photos, and I’ve scanned all but these last few. I want to finish it up so the girls will have it all, no matter where they end up.”
