Evan stirred and stretched, her whole body stiff and bruised. She opened her eyes and saw Max asleep in the chair, and dim light through the blinds. Slowly she slid out of bed and into the bathroom, eyes wide as she saw the bruising on her throat and the tangled nest of her hair. Evan got a sip of water, then started the shower. Then she looked at her ruined clothes and wondered if she should wait until she found something else to wear. A robe on the back of the door decided it for her as she peeled off her clothes and put them into the trash, then stepped under the spray.
“Evan?” Max said as he popped the door open a crack. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” Evan rasped. “Just really needed a shower. I’m going to borrow your robe if that’s okay?"
"Sure. I got you some clothes so you can get dressed when you get out,” Max replied.
“Thank you. I also desperately need coffee. I won’t be long,” Evan said.
“Take your time,” Max said and shut the door.
