It was a week before the twins’ eighteenth birthday and three weeks before they finished their junior year of high school. Considering the last birthday they had celebrated had ended in the deaths of Emery and Darra, the girls weren’t all that enthusiastic about celebrating this one. Evan asked Maggie to help.
“I want to invite Liam and Alanna, and the rest of their circle of friends, over to the house for pizza and cake. It doesn’t have to be a big deal, but eighteen is kind of special. I know they don’t want to celebrate because of what happened last year, but if I let them avoid it, then it sets a precedent,” Evan said.
“The accident wasn’t on their birthday, was it?” Maggie asked.
“No, their birthday was two days before the accident, but they’d all agreed to wait until the weekend to go out to dinner to celebrate. They’d had a meal and a cake at Espinosa’s and then the girls went out to a movie with Esha and Alanna. Emery and Darra were driving home from the restaurant when they were killed.”
